I primi commenti della stampa americana su The Acolyte sono pieni di entusiasmo, ed è interessante notare come la loro provenienza sia diversa: alcuni critici hanno partecipato alla premiere con i primi due episodi (evento glamour dov’è fin troppo facile lasciarsi prendere dall’esaltazione), mentre altri hanno visto le prime quattro puntate in anticipo grazie agli screener della Disney. Le reazioni, comunque, sono piuttosto omogenee.
La stampa elogia i toni della serie, che si conferma essere un murder mystery ambientato nella galassia lontana lontana, con i Jedi nel ruolo di detective: come sappiamo, dovranno indagare su un misterioso assassino che li sta uccidendo uno a uno. Qualcuno ha apprezzato i collegamenti tematici con la trilogia prequel, e il fatto che abbia l’aria di un “classico Star Wars“. Vengono inoltre elogiate le scene di combattimento, gli stunt, gli effetti pratici, i nuovi usi della Forza e le interpretazioni di Amandla Stenberg (Mae) e Lee Jung-jae (Maestro Sol).
Un critico ha citato Kill Bill, che in effetti è tra le fonti d’ispirazione della showrunner Leslye Headland. Un aspetto particolarmente interessante, poi, sembra essere l’ambientazione nell’Alta Repubblica, inedita in live-action: permette infatti di apprezzare l’operato dei Jedi in tempo di pace, quando l’ordine si trovava al massimo dello splendore. Pare che lo show esplori il regno mediano fra il lato luminoso e quello oscuro della Forza, interrogandosi su cosa voglia dire usare questo potere. L’unico commento poco entusiasta sostiene che la serie abbia un problema di ritmo, e che le scene d’azione – pur coinvolgenti – siano piazzate nei momenti sbagliati.
