In questi giorni l’attrice Bette Midler, che rivedremo prossimamente in Hocus Pocus 2 su Disney+, è stata criticata per due Tweet: uno transfobico risalente al 4 luglio e uno razzista pubblicato ieri.
Lunedì l’attrice ha scritto un Tweet dove ha discusso dei diritti delle donne, riferendosi anche al rovesciamento della sentenza Roe v. Wade da parte della Corte Suprema, accaduto il mese scorso, che ha portato al divieto dell’aborto in una dozzina di Stati degli USA. Ha scritto:
DONNE DEL MONDO! Ci stanno togliendo i diritti sul nostro corpo, sulla nostra vita e persino sul nostro nome! Non ci chiamano più “donne”, ma “partorienti”, “mestruate” e persino “persone con la vagina”! Non lasciate che vi cancellino! Ogni essere umano sulla terra è in debito con voi!
WOMEN OF THE WORLD! We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives and even of our name! They don’t call us “women” anymore; they call us “birthing people” or “menstruators”, and even “people with vaginas”! Don’t let them erase you! Every human on earth owes you!

Termini come “partorienti”, “mestruate” e “persone con la vagina” vengono usate per includere persone transgender e nonbinary, questo un linguaggio più inclusivo e accurato.
Fan, personaggi famosi e membri della comunità LGTBQ+ hanno provato a spiegare all’attrice che con questa terminologia non viene tolto alla donna il diritto di essere chiamata con questo nome. Di provare a riconsiderare la propria posizione e di comprendere la necessità di un linguaggio più incluso.

The fight for women’s rights INCLUDES trans people – trans rights do not erode women’s rights. We’re all fighting this together and this trans-exclusionary rhetoric does NOTHING to help that.
Bette – you are a woman. Some other people who give birth are not women. That’s ok!

I cannot think of anything that helps women’s rights less than pinning the blame on trans women. They face so much violence and scrutiny as is. Leave them alone and focus on the real war on women. It’s happening in the courts and legislatures around this country.

Altri hanno chiamato la Midler una TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist), un termine che viene usato dalle femministe per escludere i diritti delle donne transgender dal loro attivismo.
This kind of TERF ideology has been amplified and justified largely thanks to JK Rowling and her ilk. The sad part is that they are winning the rhetorical battle. Seeing this from Bette Midler just breaks my heart.

Oggi l’attrice ha condiviso un articolo del New York Times di Pamela Paul che scrive:
“l’estrema destra e l’estrema sinistra hanno trovato l’unica cosa su cui possono essere d’accordo: Le donne non contano”.
La Midler ha scritto nel tweet:
“GENTE DEL MONDO! Il mio tweet sulle donne era una risposta a questo affascinante e ben scritto articolo del NYT del 3 luglio. Non c’era alcuna intenzione di emarginare o transfobico in quello che ho detto; non si trattava di questo.
Ho lottato per le persone emarginate da sempre. Tuttavia, se volete liquidare i miei 60 anni di provato amore e preoccupazione per un tweet che ha accidentalmente fatto arrabbiare proprio le persone che ho sempre sostenuto e adorato, fate pure.
Ma la verità è che la democrazia ci sta sfuggendo dalle mani! Io sono assolutamente d’accordo nel cercare di salvare la democrazia per TUTTE LE PERSONE. Dobbiamo unirci, perché, nel caso in cui non abbiate prestato attenzione, divisi cadremo sicuramente.”

Un altro tweet, questa volta pubblicato ieri, ha sollevato altre polemiche.
L’immagine ritrae una foto della Corte Suprema, alterata digitalmente. Qui vediamo i giudici indossare dei vestiti tradizionalmente islamici e delle barbe finte.
In questo caso è stato sottolineato come come la Shari’a, la legge sacra della religione islamica, consente l’aborto fino a un certo punto. Per questo motivo l’attrice è stata accusata di razzismo e/o d’islamofobia.
