I film sui supereroi sono stati vittima, secondo i fan, di alcuni ‘colpi bassi‘ sia durante il discorso di ringraziamento del regista/sceneggiatore Dan Gilroy alle premiazioni degli Indipendent Spirit Awards.
“Il cinema indipendente, il fondamento e tutti quelli che si trovano qui oggi, penso che siano delle roccaforti contro uno tsunami di film di supereroi che hanno travolto questa industria. Siamo sopravvissuti e abbiamo prosperato e penso che questo sia il vero spirito”,
sia nel numero di apertura degli Oscar, quando Jack Black ha detto:
“Apertura con un sacco di zeri, tutto quello che abbiamo sono supereroi: Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Jedi Man, Sequel Man, Prequel uomo, script stereotipati!”.
I commenti di Black e Gilroy non sono un attacco a questo film ma al sistema, all’industria che continua a considerare queste produzioni come film minori che servono solo per far soldi, e non finanzia le produzioni indipendenti e quelle originali a medio e a basso budget.
Alla discussione ha preso parte anche il regista di Guardiani della Galassia, James Gunn che ha difeso a spada tratta i film sui supereroi in un lungo post pubblicato sul suo account facebook.
“I didn’t really find the Jack Black superhero jokes offensive, did you guys? It was, like, a joke. I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but the writing on the Oscars didn’t seem to be all that well thought out.
As far as Dan Gilroy saying that attendees of the Independent Spirit Awards have survived against a “tsunami of superhero films” – well it seems a bit weird coming from a guy whose wife has acted in two Thor films – really, that seems like you’ve drowned horribly in that tsunami. But I know I just kind of make up stuff as I go along on these awards shows, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I’ve already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.
I’ve made B-movies, independent films, children’s movies, horror films, and gigantic spectacles. I find there are plenty of people everywhere making movies for a buck or to feed their own vanity. And then there are people who do what they do because they love story-telling, they love cinema, and they want to add back to the world some of the same magic they’ve taken from the works of others. In all honesty, I do no find a strikingly different percentage of those with integrity and those without working within any of these fields of film.
If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we’re dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a “serious” filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.”
Per quel che riguarda Black, Gunn spiega di non aver considerato offensiva la sua battuta, marcando come la scrittura delle battute degli Oscar non fosse stata molto spigliata in questa edizione e di aver considerato strano il commento di Gilroy, dandogli il beneficio del dubbio.
“In ogni caso, la verità è che il biglietto popolare in qualsiasi medium è sempre stato snobbato dalle sedicenti élite. Ho già vinto più premi di quanto mi aspettassi per Guardiani. Quello che mi preoccupa un po’ è che molte persone assumono che quando fai dei grandi film ci metti meno amore, cura, e pensiero della gente che fa film indipendenti o che fa quelli che sono considerati i film più seri di Hollywood…
Se pensate che le persone che fanno film di supereroi sono sciocche, venite fuori e dite che siamo stupidi. Ma se, come filmmaker indipendente o filmmaker “serio”, pensate a dare più amore ai vostri personaggi rispetto a quello che danno i fratelli Russo a Capitan America, o Joss Whedon a Hulk, o io a un procione che parla, vi state semplicemente sbagliando”.
Il commento di Gunn sull’élite è un vero e proprio controsenso visto che la Disney e i Marvel Studios fanno parte proprio della decantata élite. Nessuno dice che i film sui supereroi e i blockbuster non sono fatti con ‘amore’, il problema è che l’industria non può e non deve fare solo tentpole, blockbuster o cinecomic. E non dobbiamo favorire solo l’uscita di queste pellicole nelle sale, a discapito di film che non possono contare su una grande macchina promozionale.
Infine c’è da tener conto che sempre più spesso registi e attori decidono di partecipare a delle grandi produzioni per poi tirare su i soldi per realizzare dei progetti che hanno a cuore e per i quali altrimenti non avrebbero la possibilità di racimolare dei finanziamenti. Se la situazione continuerà su questa strada, ci troveremo a dover finanziare sempre più film indipendenti con Kickstarter o IndieGoGo?
