La serata della 13ma edizione dei VES Awards che premia gli effetti speciali visivi al cinema, in televisione e nei videogiochi si è conclusa con l’incoronazione di due film Apes Revolution (WETA) e Big Hero 6. Il primo si è portato a casa tre premi quello per i migliori effetti speciali nella categoria Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture, per il miglior composito in quella Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture e la miglior performance di un personaggio (Caesar) in quella Animated Character in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture.
Il film Disney ha vinto invece tutte e cinque le categorie per cui era stato nominato, compresa quella per la miglior animazione in un film animato, lasciando a bocca asciutta Boxtrolls (5 nomination) e Dragon Trainer 2 (4 nomination). Le cinque vittorie al VES di Big Hero 6 sono in netto contrasto con i risultati ottenuti la scorsa settimana agli Annie, nelle categorie degli effetti speciali dove il film aveva ricevuto un solo riconoscimento.
Nell’ambito pubblicitario l’orango in CGI Maya della Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) si è portato a casa tre premi, l’anno scorso era stata la scimmia della pubblicità della PETA, 98% Human. Anche quest’anno Il trono di spade si è portato a casa tre premi per i migliori effetti speciali in un programma live action.
Anche Birdman, American Horror Story: Freak Show e Interstellar si sono portati a casa un premio, mentre la scena della cucina di X-Men: Giorni di un futuro passato due: Outstanding Effects Simulations nella categoria Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture e Outstanding Virtual Cinematography nella categoria Photoreal/Live Action Motion Media Project.
