Questa mattina, mentre il papa era impegnato nel concistoro per la canonizzazione dei martiri di Otranto, Benedetto XVI ha annunciato in lingua latina che il 28 febbraio si dimetterà dal pontificato perché a causa della sua età e della sua salute non è più pienamente in grado di portare a termine i compiti richiesti dal suo ministero. Tutto il mondo e soprattutto i vertici del Vaticano, sono rimasti sbalorditi dalla notizia, che sta coprendo i titoli principali della stampa italiana e del resto del mondo. Nella storia della chiesa, sono accadute altre due situazioni analoghe, con San Clemente I verso il 97 d.C. e con Papa Celestino V nel 1294.
La notizia è stata l’oggetto ironico di diverse battute su Twitter, di seguito riportiamo quelle meno offensive di alcuni comici d’oltreoceano e d’oltremanica, ovvero di: Ricky Gervais, Patton Oswalt, Simon Pegg, Frankie Boyle (un comico scozzese, ndr.) e Kevin Smith.
